SKLZ Hit-A-Way Baseball Batting Trainer Review

SKLZ Hit-A-Way Baseball Batting Trainer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've got a basketball goal in your driveway, you've got all you need for the SKLZ Hit-A-Way. It sets up in seconds, the ball can be adjusted to various heights through trial and error, and it is the very definition of durable. It requires about 15 or 20 feet of space for the batter to use Hit-A-Away. We've had ours for 3+ years and its still serviceable (though its gotten some UV sun damage from being left outside all the time).
The Hit-A-Way is *very* easy to use and very safe for kids. Probably the best testimonial I can give is that long after we bought it, my son (baseball) and daughters (fastpitch softball) and the neighbor kids still go out on their own and use the Hit-A-Way to practice hitting. In fact, I've talked to other parents who own the product who observe the same thing. In this day and age, ANY product that isn't attached to a TV but still keeps kids entertained is worth getting.
In addition to the above, it helps kids track and time fast pitching. I've not measured how fast the ball travels, but it is fast, and the better the batter hits it, the faster it travels back to him/her. I think this positive reinforcement is the hook that keeps kids coming back to it.
I'm picky about hitting aids, so I have one very small quibble. Because of the trajectory of the ball toward the batter, the Hit-A-Way can reinforce "bat drag" and make it difficult to fix because a swing with bat drag gets rewarded just like a correct swing does. This was a problem my son developed -- if your kid is crushing the ball on the Hit-A-Way but striking out or appearing to swing late in games, then bat drag is the likely culprit. Knowing this, I'd still buy the Hit-A-Way in a heartbeat because, again, kids love using it on their own.
Parents, this is a must buy if you have the space (and the pole) for it.

Jugs Yellow Dimpled Baseballs, 9-Inch, One Dozen Review

Jugs Yellow Dimpled Baseballs, 9-Inch, One Dozen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These Jugs dimpled baseballs are designed primarily just for use in high-grade baseball pitching machines, & I can attest that they serve this purpose relatively well. I would point out, however, that these balls will lack the physics of a typical baseball with stitching.
The price of these balls is competitive with that of lower cost leather-covered baseballs &, therefore, not a bad deal. However, one obviously does not have the other advantages of a real baseball, such as the stitching- which makes these not useful for pitching or fielding practice.
Where these balls really stand out is their durability, including being weatherproof. Unlike a baseball, for example, these could be left outside without too much detriment to their performance. Also, unlike similar looking balls we've encountered in commercial batting cages, these don't have that 'stiff-as-a-brick' like quality- although you still don't want to be hit by one.

Louisville Slugger Youth Instructo Swing 1500 Baseball Batting Tee Review

Louisville Slugger Youth Instructo Swing 1500 Baseball Batting Tee
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this item becuase my 8 year old daughter's tendency was to drop her hands, shoulder, and bat while hitting. She would open her swing too early and had such a difficult time getting her hands out in front. Though I would demonstrate to her how to properly swing she didn't seem to grasp my instruction. This swing tee was what I was looking for and after only one swing session on this tee my daughter realizes now how she's been dropping her hands. It did take a few whacks to the frame of the tee, and that painful vibration to her hands, to grasp what she was doing wrong. Shortly though, she began to keep the hands, shoulder, and bat up and swing properly. This item met my expection.
Now, the reason I gave this item only three stars. I received this item yesterday and immediately set it up. After about ten minutes each of swing practice for my 8 and 6 year old daughters, two of the three included rubber tees, which the ball seats on, had cracked in half. I'm on my last rubber tee and likely will have to purchase replacement tees at about $16 for a 3-pack. This is absolutely unacceptable for a product in this price range! My take is that the rubber tees are too stift, not enough flexibility to withstand continuous strikes from a bat. The solution to this is to use some rubber glue compound, purchase the replacement tees, or purchase the Louisville Slugger Retract-A-Ball & Tee Attachment For Instructo Swing Batting Tee for additional $60 which angers me oven more. The link to this item on Amazon is included below.
http://www.amazon.com/Louisville-Slugger-Retract-Attachment-Instructo/dp/B00183HOOI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1300024464&sr=1-1
My other complaint with the 1500 model is that it doesn't allow for a slight upward swing as pictured on the 5000 model. Also, the full downward setting (swivel fully to the right) is too angled, so much so that I wasn't able to place a softball, baseball, tennis ball, or wiffle ball on the rubber tee and have it remain. It would make more sense that the angle from the base pole that attached to the C-style rubber encased "hitting zone" would be 90 degrees given how the base pole is able to swivel. Swiveling the tee fully to the left allows for a level swing. Swiveling straight up allows for a nice downward cut. Anything to the right, you're better off purhcasing that Retract-A-Ball & Tee Attachment that I likely will end up having to do. I'll be contacting Amazon today to express my complaints with the replacement rubber tees. But for purposes of you considering my review, I would recommend this product because I've already seen a difference with both my daughter's swings after only one use.
Update: I've since purchased replacement rubber tees from another website. I had the same problem which after only a few swings the rubber tees cracked in half. I had actually supported the rubber tees by taping with black electrical tape. This made no difference and within one day of using the replacement rubber tees with my 8U softball team, they all cracked in half after only two batters. These rubber tees are horrible, absolutely terrible. What I've done since then is to use a separate rubber tee and position it flush to the Louisville swing tee. I love how this swing tee demonstrates a proper tee but the rubber replacement tees are absolutely terrible. Do not purchase any replacement tees and it's a complete waste of money.
I did elect not to purchase the Retract-a-ball tee attachment because I just don't foresee the foam casing lasting long after multiple strikes. Does Louisville actually believe that children will strike the ball without striking the rubber tee.

Easton Hyperlaunch Ball Thrower Review

Easton Hyperlaunch Ball Thrower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Easton Hyperlaunch is a useful training aid particularly for training young players. But it has one problem. The sling shot will either wear out or break after approximately 1,000 shots and Easton does not sell replacement sling shots.
While it is supposed to be able to launch a ball 200 feet, the most I have seen anyone attain is 100 feet. I don't know how Easton was able to attain 200 feet because juat to get 100 feet requries the latex sling be drawn back about as far as it can go.
While it can be used to launch both fly balls and ground balls. there is no spin on the balls so it doesn't quite simulate a ball coming off a bat But it will do.
In order for the coach to get the proper distance takes quite a bit of practice. Some coaches can throw the ball as far as the Hyperlauncher so it may not be worth the cost. It is much more accurate than trying to hit a ball with a bat.

Have a budding baseball star in your midst? Help him hone his skills on the diamond with the Easton Hyperlaunch ball thrower, which slings balls at a variety of angles with power. Ideal for infield or outfield drills, the Hyperlaunch fits comfortably in the hand somewhat like a large slingshot. Once armed, it can shoot balls over 200 feet, letting players practice fielding hot shots at third base or charging an outfield line drive in anticipation of a play at the plate. Users will also dig the unit's durable steel frame and tough latex tubing, which won't break down at the first sign of stress. And when you're finished with fielding practice, the handle folds up conveniently for compact storage in a carrying bag or box. A fun training device for kids and adults of all ages, the Hyperlaunch comes with three soft neon 9-inch balls and is backed by a 90-day warranty.
About Easton In 1922, Doug Easton began crafting custom wood bows and cedar arrows in Watsonville, California. Although Doug produced tournament-grade, footed cedar arrows for the archery champions of that era, he was constantly frustrated with the inconsistency and lack of uniformity of wood shafts. Convinced that consistently straight uniform arrow shafts were impossible to manufacture from wood, Doug turned his attentions to aluminum. In 1939, he began manufacturing aluminum arrows in Los Angeles. His instincts about this material were correct, and in 1941, California archer Larry Hughes won the national championship with a set of Doug's aluminum arrows. This was the beginning of a trend that would change traditional archery and transcend into numerous other sports arenas over the next 50 years. Considered one of the world's preeminent innovators, designers, and manufacturers of sporting equipment, Easton has a reputation of producing products for the highest level of performance.

Jugs Small-Ball Machine Package Review

Jugs Small-Ball Machine Package
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this for my son, but have to admit I have a great time with it myself. It feels like this must be what it's like to be a big leaguer and use the pitching machines that they use. Except of course that this uses small, lightweight foam balls and not hardballs. The "hitting stick" is a smaller than standard bat, so the concept is that you're hitting a smaller ball with a smaller "bat" so that when you hit with a regulation ball and bat the "target" seems much bigger. My son has followed the training regime fairly closely, and believes he is better able to track the ball when I'm throwing real pitches. We've set this up in our basement using the power cord (the light, soft balls make it so that it can be used indoors) but it also comes with a battery pack so that you can take it to a ball field. The battery pack is not as powerful as when it's plugged in, and since it's not necessary to set up 46-feet away (official LL distance from pitching rubber to home plate) there is really no reason not to do this in an even small to mid sized yard. The product is sturdy but doesn't weight much, so I've found that the "pitcher" needs to hold it still to get the pitches to hit a consistent spot. Not a problem.

It's been said that the toughest thing to do in sports is hit a round ball with a round bat. Now you can hone your skills even further with the Jugs Small-Ball pitching package, which tests your mettle with a ball half the size. By practicing against a 5-inch Jugs polyurethane foam ball, hitters learn to track the ball better from the release point to the impact zone, while simultaneously sharpening their mental focus. In addition, the Small-Ball machine helps hitters improve depth perception by forcing them to keep their head still and eyes level. And young hitters can learn the fundamentals of hitting without the fear of getting whacked by a real baseball.
The Small-Ball pitching machine is built of heavy-duty steel, with adjustable legs that help simulate a realistic delivery height for both baseballs and softballs. More significantly, the machine throws fastballs or overhand curves with uncanny accuracy, with simulated speeds of up to 75 miles per hour. Just load up the 25-ball feeder--which offers both manual and automatic feeds--and the mechanism will release a ball every five seconds. Plus, when it's time for fielding practice, you can adjust the machine to instead shoot fly balls and ground balls. Safe to use anywhere, including backyards, garages, or your chosen practice field, the Small-Ball pitching machine is popular among backyard players, youth leagues, high schools, and colleges.
The Small-Ball pitching package also includes a number of other items to prepare you for your practice routine. For example, the package includes the Small-Ball instant protective screen, which sets up in front of the pitching machine to protect the machine itself and a coach standing behind it. The screen requires no setup--just unfold it when you're ready for practice and fold it back up when you're done (the screen collapses into a 27-inch circle). The screen, which is made of sturdy yet lightweight fiberglass tubing, measures 4 by 6 feet (W x H), weighs less than 5 pounds, and comes with its own nylon carrying case. Also included are four-dozen small balls for use in the Small-Ball pitching machine. Each 5-inch polyurethane foam ball helps you develop better hand-eye coordination, quicken your bat speed, and boost your mental concentration. Perhaps most importantly for younger hitters, it also minimizes the fear factor should the pitch be located inside.
If the Small-Ball pitching machine and four-dozen small balls don't seem like enough to hone your skills, you can turn to the included hitting stick, which measures 30 inches long and weighs a mere 16 ounces. The stick--which is really an ultra-thin bat--can help you improve your focus even more by requiring a more-refined swing to make good contact. Finally, the Small-Ball package comes with a lightweight and portable home plate and a drill book for instruction.
The Jugs Small-Ball pitching machine operates on standard 110-volt AC power, but can also function on a separately sold battery pack. The portable design weighs only 23 pounds and carries a one-year warranty.

Hit N Stik Baseball Hitting Stick Batting Trainer 54" Youth Review

Hit N Stik Baseball Hitting Stick Batting Trainer 54 Youth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are a parent or player looking for a batting aid to use for your personal use, the Baseball Hitting Stick may be a good product for you. It requires one person to hold it and one person to swing at it, so it is not a product that the batter can use by him/herself. However, it is an excellent tool as it allows the batter maximum reps and provides good feedback on whether they hit the target well or not.
As a coach, you need a hitting stick or similar product as a batting station, as it is much a much faster and efficient station than using a tee, and it is the very definition of "simple to use" which means that your players can run the station and allow you to coach and supervise. I also like using "baseball-sized" hitting sticks for fastpitch softball practice because it is a smaller target for my players to hit. Until it broke, I was very satisfied with it.
I bought this Hitting Stick about a year ago. It lasted through three girls softball seasons before the end split in two (horizontally, underneath the ball). A couple of weeks before that, the plastic that held the baseball end to the black fiberglass casing broke off. The elastic wrist band had stretched out a little bit by then, but was still stretchy enough to fit over the holder's wrist and help her hold the stick when it got it. The padded holder end was still basically good-as-new.
I figure that my Baseball Hitting Stick got hit by about 33,000 swings from 14U and 12U recreational league and All-Star girls fastpitch softball players using their aluminum bats. In comparison, another Hitting Wand that I've used only lasted about 11,000 swings.

The Hit N Stik is quite simply the most effective and versatile batting drill device available today. Its strength lies in its sheer simplicity. It resembles a baseball on the hitting end, This is attached to a long, flexible shaft, fiberglass compound. This in turn, is connected to an easy grip handle that is held by the coach or drill partner. The result is a simple, safe, controllable, and non threatening device that has proven to dramatically improve hitting stance, contact, and bat control. It is much more affordable than traditional mechanical pitching devices, and offers more control and safety than any other product

Derek Jeter Hurricane Batting Trainer Review

Derek Jeter Hurricane Batting Trainer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The hurricane is basically a holder for an older product called a "Hit-N-Stick". It also provides visual feedback on how hard the bat hits the target. The problem with my unit is that the power bands (bungee cords) that provide resistance, tangle with the height adjustment knob on almost every swing. The knob can be positioned so that tangles don't occur, but the knob drifts with each swing. So after a just few swings, the tangles start again.
I contacted SKLZ customer support by email (customerservice@properformancesports.com) a week ago. So far, no response.
The thing is usable but I am considering returning it. I wouldn't recommend purchasing until the flaw is addressed. The fact that customer service ignored me is also a big red flag.

Rawlings Hand-Eye Training Bat Review

Rawlings Hand-Eye Training Bat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this bat for my 13 year old entering high school to continue working on his hand eye coordination.
He's been using a 32" 25 oz growbat up until now and he's been doing very well as a hitter. I didn't feel like spending another $60 on a high school / adult growbat so I thought I'd give this a try. This serves the intended purpose of forcing a hitter to concentrate more.
I recommend you get a 4" long water pipe insulation foam tube and slide it onto the sweet spot of the bat. You can wind some rubber bands on the bat at both end of the foam to keep it from sliding. The foam serves 2 purposes. It helps the youngster focus on hitting the tiny ball on the sweet spot and it minimizes the damage to the wiffle balls. The plastic wiffle balls break very quickly if they're smacked by the metal bat a few times.

Hit-A-Way Baseball Swing Trainer Review

Hit-A-Way Baseball Swing Trainer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The premise behind hit-a-way is fine: hit the ball hard enough that it wraps around the pole tightly, let it unwind, and then hit it again as it comes around. It looks great in the video. Real life - not so much.
We tried to use this last year with a group of 7-8 year-olds. My observations:
1) Young hitters, probably up to at least age 10, can't reliably hit the ball hard enough to get it to wrap around the pole. You end up needing an adult to re-wrap the cable and "launch" the ball. This greatly reduces the repetitions and the usefulness.
2) Poles are harder to find than you think on a baseball field. You basically need either a basketball goal or you need to buy the "portable" pole that is sold separately (note - very heavy and expensive - not worth it)
3) Because the ball comes in from an angle and at an odd speed, I question the value for young hitters. It is hard enough to time a thrown pitch. Trying to also learn to time an uncoiling cable was counterproductive.
Bottom line - we tried it for a couple of practices and then gave up.
Who could use this? Well - if you have a 12 year or older hitter who wants to get in some solo practice AND a handy free-standing pole, I think this would have some value.
Tools to consider that I have found helpful in coaching are a "zip-n-hit" and a "hit-n-stick". Both are available on Amazon. (and also by Hit-A-Way, among other companies).

The New Swingaway Baseball Hitting Batting Trainer Review

The New Swingaway Baseball Hitting Batting Trainer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just got it last weekend.
It totally flatten out my son's swing.
I was going to return it as one pulley broke after 1 day of use.
They sent us another one right away and then the Ball broke off.
(recall the ropes were defective _ from China) and now they are sending us
another ball with rope on it.
But even after 1 weekend of use.
My 12 year old went 5 for 5 with 2 over the fence HR's and my 9 year old did fine as well. I enjoyed the work out it gave me and even my wife started swinging the bat
also. We had to go to the local store just to buy a $20 bat to swing in the Backyard.
My son's use combat bats and we did not want to destroy them.
So we can now hit every day.
The main thing like hitting off the tee is that his device makes you focus totally on the ball meeting the bat or else the ball does not swing and bounce right.
You know right away if you hit the ball square.
Bottom line.
A little expensive.
I only bought this because it was on sale.
It will pay back in parent gradification.

Overall a good training device. I've used the baseball and now the softball version, and both have been good for my hitting practice.
My only complaint on the softball one is that after about 1000 hits or so, the ball is now slightly mis-shaped. Still quite usable though, and I plan to keep using it all season.
It is also useful to break in a new bat.
Since I have a basketball hoop, it was no problem attaching and using this. Set-up takes about 30 seconds each time I use it.
All in all a good product!
