First, it came with a soft but firm ball that he could be a little rough with and not break while at the same time, if he got hit he didn't get hurt. Second, the glove itself was softer than a traditional glove which makes it perfect for learning how to close his hands over the ball when he catches it. It was not too heavy for him, or too big. In general a perfect beginners glove for ages 5 to 8.
